The objective of this course is to provide consulting engineers, professionals, technicians, instructors and students a first glance at the design of aluminium structures as well as extensive information on the main characteristics of structural aluminium. The course guides the participants through the most significant portions of the practical and theoretical developments of the reference book Design of aluminium Structures written by Dr. Denis Beaulieu.
This is the first book dealing with structural aluminium to be published in Canada. It adopts a pragmatic approach and offers engineers and technicians a practical tool for designing aluminium structures. It is supported with a number of numerical examples covering all the material. The book draws from the Canadian standard CAN/CSA S157-05, Strength Design in aluminium and from other Canadian, American and European standards and codes in order to broaden its contents.

From an aluminium use perspective in the transportation industry, the course will present the aluminium types, their properties and applications, the assembly techniques, the forming processes as well as the applicable design criteria and their adaptation to vehicles. Case studies will provide an application framework comparing chassis and structural components both in steel and aluminium from a stiffness and strength viewpoints.
